I’ve learned through this process that you don’t quit advocating for yourself until you’re comfortable with the answers.
When I let my doctors know that I had been feeling a weird pain recently where I had originally found my cancer lump, they were concerned and scheduled an appointment for the next day. The breast cancer screening doctor said everything felt and looked pretty normal, but she ordered an ultrasound just in case. When I completed the ultrasound, the next doctor said everything seemed pretty normal as well, but there was a lymph node left. Because 14 of 21 lymph nodes originally came back positive for cancer 8 months ago, he did the biopsy just in case.
Just in case. Just.In.Case.
When I went in 8 months ago for my original screening, the doctor wasn’t super concerned. But… I advocated for my first mammogram… just in case. And taking that next step might have saved my life, or at a minimum kept me from moving to Stage 3 or 4.
I’m also SO thankful for those doctors and nurses that have taken every one of my symptoms and concerns seriously. I may have jumped through a few extra hoops along the way, but I would do them all again if it meant ensuring I had the best shot at beating cancer and being able to put it behind me.
You’re in control of your life. You’re in control of your health. And you always get the last say when it comes to your future.
Don’t settle for maybes. Be sure. If you feel like something is off, always push for the “just in case” tests. I don’t regret it, and I don’t think you will either
